Your options

You can choose what feels right for you. You can choose one or more options, in any order, or none at all. You do not need to report to police to get care, now or ever.

Get medical care

You can get medical care to:

  • check for injuries and get treatment;
  • prevent pregnancy; and
  • prevent or treat infections.

A support person, such as a family member, friend or support worker, can go with you.

In Whitehorse

If you’d like a trained support worker to go with you, call 1-844-967-7275.

In Yukon communities

Go to your local health centre or hospital.

Get counselling and emotional support

You can:

  • talk to someone about what you experienced;
  • access mental wellness services and referrals; and
  • access cultural and land‑based supports.

Get help collecting evidence

A nurse or doctor can collect and document evidence that may help with an investigation. This is sometimes called a forensic exam or sexual assault evidence kit (SAEK).

  • You decide whether to have evidence collected.
  • If you’re 19 years of age or older, you can choose whether to report to the police now or later.
  • If you’re unsure about reporting, evidence may be stored while you decide. Different rules may apply for children and youth.
  • Evidence collection is usually done within 7 days of the assault.
  • If you think you may have been drugged, toxicology testing may be available within 72 hours.
  • Travel support is available if your community does not have a hospital.

Reporting to the police (RCMP) – or not

You can:

There is no time limit for reporting.

Share information without reporting

You can share information about what happened without giving your name. This is called third-party reporting.

A trained professional records the information and provides it to the police to keep on file. You can choose to identify yourself later.

If you are supporting someone

What you say and how you respond matters.

Start by:

  • listening without interrupting;
  • saying: “I believe you”;
  • telling them it is not their fault; and
  • asking what they need.

Then:

  • respect their choices and pace;
  • help them explore options if they want; and
  • offer to call the support line together.

You can call the support line at 1‑844‑967‑7275 for guidance.

Supporting a child or youth

  • Stay calm and listen.
  • Reassure them they are not at fault.
  • Do not press for details.
  • Let them use their own words.

If you think a child or youth may be at risk and needs protective intervention, you should contact Family and Children’s Services or the RCMP to share your concerns.

If you are unsure what to do:

  • call the support line at 1‑844‑967‑7275; or
  • contact Family and Children’s Services at 867‑667‑3002.

You can continue to support the child while steps are taken to keep them safe and provide care.

If this happened to you

Sexualized violence can happen to anyone. You may feel scared, angry, numb or unsure what to do. All of these reactions are valid.

What happened is not your fault.

If you’re unsure whether what happened to you was sexualized violence, we can talk it through with you. You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out.

SART connects you with supports across the Yukon. A trained person will:

  • listen without judgment;
  • explain your options; and
  • support the decisions you make.
